MOXIBUSTION THERAPY

 

 

 

Moxibustion is a healing therapy which treats and prevents disease by applying burning moxa wool, Mugwort Artemsia Vulgaris, on to an area of the body. Moxibustion dates back approximately 3,000 years and is still being used in primary heath care throughout China today. It is an important treatment method and is often used in combination with Acupuncture. When these modalities are used together it is called "Zhen Jiu" in Chinese. The "Zhen", means "needling or acupuncture" and the "Jui", means "moxibustion". While moxibustion is mostly used in combination with needling, it may also be used alone in treating disease.

Functions of moxibustion:

Warms the meridians and expels cold Induces the smooth flow of qi and blood Strengthens yang from collapse Strengthens body resistance and eliminates pathogens Prevent diseases and keeps the immune system healthy.

Indications of moxibustion:

Moxibustion is often used for internal diseases, gynecological diseases, pediatric diseases, external diseases, and trauma, etc. Its a special treatment for deficiency, cold and chronic diseases.

Precautions of moxibustion:

Generally, moxibustion is applied to the upper part of the body first, then lower part; first the back and then the abdomen. The head and body are treated first and the four extremities second. But clinically, the sequence should be given according to the pathological conditions of the particular patient.

Contraindications of moxibustion:

Excess heat syndromes and heat due to yin deficiency, should not be treated with moxibustion.
Scarring moxibustion should not be applied to the face, head or areas close to large blood vessels.
Moxibustion should not be applied to the abdomen or lumbosacral region of pregnant women.
