CUPPING THERAPY

Cupping therapy has been part of Chinese medicine for about 3,000 years. Originally used by tribes in Africa, Asia, and South America to remove poison from insect and snakebites, cupping therapy has also been used to treat colds and chest infections. More recently, cupping therapy has been used to treat fibromyalgia by relieving tender muscles and joints. Cupping therapy has gained popularity along with massage therapy, acupuncture, and other alternative treatments.

Even with the growing popularity, Mayo Clinic reports that evidence supporting cupping therapy as a beneficial treatment for fibromyalgia is purely anecdotal. There are no peer-reviewed clinical trials which evaluate cupping therapy as a treatment for fibromyalgia or other painful diseases and conditions.

The traditional method of cupping uses glass cups. The practitioner soaks a cotton ball with alcohol and lights it on fire. The cotton ball is then held inside the cup to create a vacuum. The cotton ball is removed from the glass cup and the cup is placed on the patient's skin. Usually 4 to 6 cups are used at a time and they are left on the skin for about 10-15 minutes. The skin raises up into the cup as circulation of blood is drawn to the area. Cupping therapy is said to not be a painful but it does leave red welts on the skin as it works to improve fibromyalgia symptoms.
